Per 0.5 mL Pneumococcal vaccine, polyvalent, 25 mcg of each polysaccharide type (Types 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6B, 7F, 8, 9N, 9V, 10A, 11A, 12F, 14, 15B, 17F, 18C, 19A, 19F, 20, 22F, 23F, 33F)
Indications/Uses
Immunization against pneumococcal disease for selected individuals: Immunocompetent patients [eg, routine vaccination for patient ≥50 yr, patient ≥2 yr w/ chronic CV disease (including CHF & cardiomyopathies), chronic pulmonary disease (including COPD & emphysema) or DM; alcoholism, chronic liver disease (including cirrhosis) or cerebrospinal fluid leaks; functional or anatomic asplenia (including sickle cell disease & splenectomy); patient ≥2 yr living in special environments or social settings (including Alaskan Natives & certain Native American Indian)] or immunocompromised patients (eg, patient ≥2 yr w/ HIV infection, leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, multiple myeloma, generalized malignancy, chronic renal failure or nephrotic syndrome; receiving immunosuppressive chemotherapy (including corticosteroids), organ or bone marrow transplant.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Special Precautions
Do not administer IV or intradermally. In persons receiving immunosuppressive therapy, expected serum Ab response may not be obtained. Intradermal administration may cause severe local reactions. Individuals w/ severely compromised cardiac &/or pulmonary function. Delay usage in individuals w/ febrile resp illness or other active infection. In patients who require antibiotic prophylaxis against pneumococcal infection, such prophylaxis should not be discontinued after vaccination w/ Pneumovax 23. Epinephrine inj (1:1000) must be immediately available should an acute anaphylactoid reaction occur due to any component of the vaccine. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <2 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Fever, inj site reactions (eg, pain, soreness, erythema, warmth, swelling, local induration), decreased limb mobility & peripheral edema in the injected extremity. Asthenia/fatigue, myalgia & headache.
